We (parents and two kids) shared two desktops and a laptop which were provided (some cases discarded) by my employer. Each teenager received a new Mac pro for college.

We love our 22 and 27" iMacs. And I love our home office space. DH and the teens also have MacBooks and we have iPads and a mini. Works for us. Don't know how it could be considered old school but whatever.

Bought son his first, brand new laptop at age 12. A chrome book and it is the perfect choice. Before that he used an old extra laptop we had around the house or one of our laptops.

no kid lap tops here. Kids age 15.5 and 10. With this age gap, we've never had a problem with sharing the desktop computer, and DH and I share our own laptop that the kids don't use. If in the next few years, sharing the desktop becomes a problem, we'll probably allow one of them to use the laptop as necessary with permission.

I like my kids' computer use right out in the open where I can see it, so kid laptops aren't an option here. The desktop sits in the dining room. My teen has plenty of quiet there if he needs it for school work, since the TV is some distance away.

My youngest son who is his 3rd year of engineering school was required to get a high end laptop for about 2K. Uses it every day.

my soon to be 5th grader is saving money right now. he should have 500-600 dollars around december, so he will buy it then. right now he borrows our desktop, i pod or surface. he has had his own kindle for 2 years.

17 for the oldest when we got tired of her always using ours. 12 or the youngest - his IEP allows him to take notes in class with it.

Christmas of Gr. 8 so she could do schoolwork without needing ours.
