Please run outside as well. Treadmills can cause injuries...does not biild the stability muscles for running without assistance (treadmill is assisted running). Please also try out some weight training. Your knees will thank you one day.

As a runner myself a huge part of my methodology os injury prevention. Running is a very abusive sport.

Good for you! I just joined a running program (after 10 years of not running) and I'm not even running for 10 minutes yet. Join a running program if you can. I like the camaraderie and also the tips and advice from the trainers who run them. It is what got me running 10 years ago (and then kids got in the way) and again now.

Congrats! A fall 5k sounds like the perfect motivator. Since you are running on a treadmill, try adjusting the incline once you have built up a base. If you run at 2.5%, you'll be better prepared for outdoor running.

I second the idea of a couch to 5K program. There are some on-line. A program like this will give you the structure to prepare and increase your running without increasing it at too great a speed and causing injury.

That's fantastic! You have to start someplace! I started with 5 minute runs last year, and I worked my way up to half marathons. You can totally do a 5k!! Good luck!

Look into a Couch to 5K training program. I'm on week 6 of an 8 week program and have really liked it. And I hate running.

Haha, it was on a treadmill I break a sweat just walking to the gym in this weather! I've heard mixed thoughts on whether outside/treadmill is easier or more difficult. Treadmill is more boring and a harder mental game, but outdoors provides more difficult surface to run on. For now I'm going to keep trying to build endurance on the treadmill until the weather gets cooler. Then maybe acclimate for a month or two outside before doing a race. No idea, as I've clearly never done this before and learning as I go!

OP here. Wow, thanks so much for the positive replies! Knowing DCUM I was afraid I'd get a lot of snark, but I'm very pleasantly surprised. Thanks, all! I'm thinking of signing up for a 5k in October-November. I think that'll give me enough time to build up the endurance to run the whole way (hopefully)...
