I don't think this is at all unique to the Ivies. I went to an Ivy League school, but had plenty of high school friends who went to various other colleges, both public and private, and when I visited them, the scene was much the same.

I graduated 10+ years ago, so this also isn't anything "new" as it was fully in place when I matriculated 15+ years ago.

I have my doubts whether these young women are being honest with themselves. My skepticism starts with the claim that they prefer hookups / f*** buddies because they do not have the time for relationships.

My recollection from college is more the opposite - having a girlfriend / boyfriend was stabilizing. Basically you have plans and do some more non-drinking oriented stuff (movies etc) than when single and even drink a little less at the parties etc at least if together. When you are single, there's a lot more going to parties, drinking with the guys, trying to pick up girls etc..

Unless the claim is literally they have no social lives other than the weekly appointment to hook up / have sex. My memory is there are very few students that work / study that obsessively - and remember them as pretty conservative in their habits.

Lots of educated, financially independent women are discovering that they are better off unmarried. As an institution I think it's over-rated, especially for women.

True for all of US posting here, but only SOME of US condemn what we don't understand.

I plead guilty to not engaging in the "hook up" culture, but I don't condemn the liberated young women who do.

The hookup culture starts with people born around 1979. As a woman born in 1976, I've somewhat experienced it by "dating" men a few years younger than me. Man, they have the worst dating manners! It is all hooking up, texting to say, hey want to meet me Nd my friends at a bar tonight? Etc. no thanks. How about asking me out to dinner a few times and then maybe ill go home with you? Glad that guys my age and older tend to have better, cleaner manners. The hook up culture is emotionally confusing for women. I think it is terrible. Women hook up with men, then are waiting around to see if he likes them enough to date them. It is far better to get to know a guy through dating and make him show he likes you better getting physically involved.

Went to an elite LA college in the early 00's...girls were just as much into the hookup culture as men. Very little dating. Too much work to do. Hooking up is/was a release. This article is a big yawn.

The hookup culture increases as alcohol consumption increases. If women were not trying to drink as much as guys they would not be subjecting themselves to this type of treatment.
