I would, unless, as others mentioned, there was something crucial going on at work. In my office, sick leave is for health care of the employee or someone needing the employee's care. I took sick leave when my MIL was dying, for example.

I would (and have) if it was a day without anything super important on my calendar. But then, no one has to cover for me when I'm out. It just means more work for the next day.

Thanks all. It just seemed to me that it wasn't my employers problem that I had a baby which thus came with the expected sleep deprivation. We've been doing pretty good up until now. I was just highly out of it and very uncomfortable, but I could still do my job. When I'm out sick, someone does have to cover my shift, and we have so many people out on vacation right now, I didn't want to force my coworkers into 12 hour shifts when they are already working overtime this week. But, as evident by my crazy schedule today, other people don't feel the same way.

I was just asking the question for the future, as this situation has come up a couple of times, and yesterday was the worst. I am sure that this is not the end of our long nights and hard days. I won't be so willing to tough it out next time.

And no, there is no reward for not using sick time. Good point about the layoffs. The only reward is that my boss doesn't start giving you the evil eye.
