At times asleep and at times awake just staring at the door. I think this is separation anxiety. He slept ok before this. I just don't see the end in sight. I'm scared he's never going to sleep normally again. He does the same for naps. Stands there for three hours either babbling or crying becaise he's falling asleep with his head on the bars then falling over.

What happens if you try to lay him down flat once he's asleep standing up? Does he always wake up?

PLEASE someone who has lived through this tell me what happens. We are in the same boat with our 20 month old. This child is so stubborn he stands all night....11 hours and there is no sign of it letting up. Someone please help me before I admit myself. This is insane. We don't go in and it's gone on for weeks.

Hello. I am currently having the same problem with my 17 month old. We've done the "cry it out" method and she continues to stand and sleep for hours on end (occasionally falling when her legs give out from exhaustion, but then she gets right back up again). This lasts the entire night. Its been well over a month now that she's been doing this. I would love to hear from someone who went through it and it eventually came to an end? It feels like it will last forever at this point. It seems to have lasted longer than any of her other sleeping "phases". I end up bringing her into our bed for sleep after a few hours. I do understand how bringing her into our bed can "encourage this behavior" but when she stands until 5am and doesn't sleep i have no choice. She needs sleep. And i start to feel like her standing so long is torture. I would love to hear how this ended for other people who have been through it and what the solution (if any) was? I feel as if she is still too small for a toddler bed at this point. Thank you!

Maybe you feed her too late in the evening and/or she is having acid reflux?

My dd did this at 21 mo too with a two month old sibling - she stopped doing it after about a week - we never figured out why she was doing it

Hi - I realize this is a bit of an older post at this point but was wondering if there was any resolution. We are having the same (nearly identical) problem with our 21 month old (who has a 3.5 month old brother who she is wonderful with) who is crying for up to an hour before she falls asleep standing up and then it is on and off crying/falling back asleep standing until she finally at some point lays down. hoping the original poster can give some insight into what happened. Let her sleep in the bed with you. She's unsettled and needs to feel safe and loved.

If she is moving, as in standing up or sleep walking, this could indicate sleep apnea. Especially since she has had ongoing sleep issues for awhile, please bring this up to her pediatrician.

Any update on how this resolved? We are going through something similar and it's lasted over a month with no improvement.

Give her a book or two to read in bed when you put her down? She's be more likely to lie or sit and would probably just fall asleep.

I'd keep her in the crib. You can always stay in the room with her until she falls asleep that way. But I think it will be trouble to have her be able to climb out and come to you.

I'm thinking we may try the mattress idea on the floor tonight. I would stay in with her until she falls asleep and then sneak out. One concern though is that she is a very active sleeper. I don't know if that's the right word for it but she is constantly flipping, and tossing and turning all over the place. I know she will fall off of the tiny toddler mattress. She has a rug on her floor over hardwood floor. Pillows around the mattress maybe?
