Only in our abysmally anti-intellectual country could this be considered something "trendy" and therefore negative.

OP here. I think I need to accept that maybe the word "rescue" has come to mean something different in this scenario. I think of the word as very heroic, so if somebody frequently says they rescued their dog, or calls their dog a "rescue," I think they're bragging. Or I feel like they should only use that word if they actually lifted a burning car off the dog. So maybe all "rescue" means is "adopted" or "picked a stray up off the street." Not to demean the actions, it's the only way I'd get a pet. But like I said before I never even use the word.

I mean, people who adopt children from an overseas orphanage are surely rescuing the kids from a terrible life. But nobody would EVER say their kid is a rescue!

You can still adopt from the pound or the SPCA pretty easily, even in NOVA.

I'm all for that. You can adopt a dog and a kid.

So let's start shaming people about breeding kids when they can adopt. They're contributing to overpopulation.

It's not the people who rescue dogs that are contributing to human overpopulation; it's the people who are birthing humans like there's no tomorrow (i.e. the countless threads about how tragic it is that someone could *only* have one child).

Don't blame the dog rescuers for the starving kids in Africa.

I'm all for people saying all of the time that their dogs are rescues. It's good publicity for how great rescued dogs can be.

I had a purebred dog that I got from the SPCA. I did like to point out that I got him from the SPCA, because I wanted people to know, hey, you can get a purebred from a shelter! You don't have to go to a breeder to get a specific breed.

I don't understand why it bothers you so much. The only people I've met that are bothered by it are the people who feel guilty because they bought their dogs from breeders.

And maybe it is "en vogue." Good. A lot of dogs die each year because people don't adopt.

Shaming people has been a very effective way to get people to quit smoking. If we can shame people into not buying dogs from breeders or stores, then I'm all for it.

Do you think it's possible that those are your negative views of the process and not those of the rescuers? I don't know any dog rescuers who are looking for praise. Love, affection, companionship, and a sense of doing something kind? Often, yes.

Yes, and my church tries to support them with money, schools, and some adoptions. Sadly, there's a huge difference in the amount of money required to raise a child and rescue a dog.

I only tell people if they ask me where I got him.

Maybe that's just the NOVA area? Try Tennessee, NC, and GA--not the case there.

Yep, our dog came from GA. He was on the euth list for the next day, so we committed ourselves to him. What a wonderful dog he is!!! We purposely went with a rural shelter, dogs at least have a chance here. In the south, it's very hard on dogs and cats.

We have a senior dog with secial needs, he cannot walk and his tongue is always hanging out. People will ask about him and rescuing him is part of the story. We love that littled bugger so much and if hearing about how great our little guy is and what he went through makes someone think twice about adopting rescue all the better!

Breeder here: We work very hard to have the best quality animal with the best disposition available to a new home. It is a LOT of work. We really do not want our animal to end up in a shelter. So we ask a lot of questions. People can be very silly about animals. Other people make terrific owners and love our animals for a lifetime. I have placed many rescues as well. There are warning signals that it will not work out ...
