I've not been there but the location alone screams not hip. This is coming from a B&T girl (as lame as that description is bc clearly plenty of people in DC proper don't know shit about what's new)!

I've been to Le Diplomate three times. The first time, a week after opening, even the sidewalk outside was mobbed, just people waiting to get their name on the list. Then a brunch; people without reservations were waiting 45+ minutes. Then again just this week. We got there just before six and got exactly the table we wanted, no wait. By 7:00, there was a small crowd outside waiting for a table.
So I think that yes, you can get a reservation same day. Do not try to go without reservations during dinner or brunch hours.
It's pretty much my ideal for a grown-up restaurant (and yes, grown-ups often have kids, so I don't see being kid-accepting as a negative).Great atmosphere, excellent food. What's not to like? So, PP, what do you think is "hip"? White pleather and black lights, with oonse-oonse music cranked to 11?


If you read my post, you see I go there often. We have eaten there pretty much weekly since they opened (since we live next door). We love the place, but its not hip. If you don't know what a "hip" place is, be glad. My hip days are behind me, maybe you never had yours.

The newest and is Casa Luca (opened today). Teddy and Mockingbird Hill are right before. Red Hen are Etto were not long before. Le Diplomate, although considered hip, is no longer super new. Mintwood is great, but not new, as probably 100 places have opened since it did. Mockingbird Hill currently wins for hippest of those.

Masa 14 is old, not the slightest bit hip, and just not very good.

Range is not wirth the wait for the reservation been there twice both times it was pretty average at best.
