Janney is getting six new classrooms in the summer of 2014. That will go a long way towards alleviating the projected crowding.

It will help for the next few years.

I am a parent of a two young ES students at Janney. I realize this is just one experience, but there are 6 infants/toddlers on my quite small block that are under 2 and I see babies in strollers everywhere. I would not count on the demand alleviating within the next 10-12 years.

Janney is oversubscribed. There's no way they can expand capacity. The only other options are to either be forced to move or go to a private (if you can afford those options- and many of us can't) or to start taking over other DCPS schools and start demanding they provide an appropriate education and a safe environment for kids. #OccupyDCSchools

Murch had one kid go private last year. People are moving for Deal (that is exactly what we did) and Wilson is looking better and better. Doesn't bode well for anyone looking OOB spots on the ES and MS levels.

There is absolutely a bubble going through Janney right now.

Eventually there is a new normal - but from looking around my block, I would guess that they will not open up for at least 5-10 years.

Also - there are a lot of properties that are rentals in the neighborhood and most of these are rented to families with young children who plan on being here for a few years and then move on to the next assignment for the World Bank or some other job.

Given these schools, even the not good enough for my child middle and high Deal/Wilson are over subscribed currently, it is hard to see how that number declines anytime soon. I agree that this is wishful thinking, especially in the near term.

Yes. Our block still has many middle age to elderly people. They will be moving on (one way or another) in the coming 10 to 15 years.

Families will leave for high school. Wilson isn't that great. Many of my kids' friends (we went private for MS) who went to Deal have gone private or moved to the burbs for high school.

That may be the case, but a lot of those people stay put and go private.

And another set of those people may move to the burbs and keep their SFH in AU Park that they bought in 2002 for $475K when they had an infant, and rent it out for $4500+/month, more than twice their PITI.
