Subject: Help me out: where would you live in Northern Virginia?
I am from southern MD. I wouldn't live there with kids, but I would go back in a heartbeat to a waterfront community in Calvert or St. Mary's counties. (I live in NoVa now...)

Very helpful suggestions from everyone. I will definitely investigate the various options suggested.
That is pretty much it! You are right that the diversity aspect would be an issue as one moves further out.

I would live near the Happy Tart Bakery on Mt Vernon in Alexandria. I love the area. The Birchmere is there too.

Middleburg
Purcellvile
Culpepper
Warrenton
Or a beach community (these are in MD though)

1) culpepper perhaps is an option if you want some land
2) the area of locust grove (lake of the woods) - not gated but access controlled and close to the VRE for an easy and relatively quick train ride into DC/Union Station. but lake access/lake side (if you are interested in that sort of lifestyle), golf, tennis, etc. and very close (driving distance) to a range of amenities
3) really wish I had your dilemma
