My hair is wiry because of being gray, which I color, but to embrace summer, I decided to get a body wave. In the past, I would french braid my hair to give more definition to the waves, but now, I comb it while it's being conditioned, wrap my hair in a towel, then shake my hair - voila! I have long slightly curly, wavy hair. Even though I have a body wave, I still use Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum to stop the frizz and Aveda Be Curly to define the curls. I liked to use the flat iron, but only in the winter, DC summers are so humid, my hair looked YUCK.

I went to the Sugarhouse in OT for the body wave. I know perms are out, but mine looks very natural.

I never use a hair dryer, and I go 2-3 days between washes.

After washing and conditioning, I towel-dry my hair and comb through. Then I put in Oribe Supershine creme and then Kerastase oleo-relax serum, putting more product on the ends than the scalp.

Then I braid my hair, starting at the nape of my neck, which helps tame the curl/frizz. I take the braid out after a few hours and let it air dry the rest of the way. Touch it as little as possible.

OSHA has a lot of information on this, including documented evidence of the producers of these products falsely advertising that they are formeldahyde free. They aren't. If you want to get it done, your stylist must be in a separate room, wearing a respirator, with ventilation that is separate from the rest of the facility. Most don't, and they are not in compliance with FDA and OSHA safety standards.

Bring on the chemicals. The harsher the better.

Hah! Thanks for demonstrating Darwinism.

What if you just want to air dry your hair? Is there a product to tame frizziness and not use a hair dryer?

I use henna to color my hair and use coconut oil 1-2 times a week (doing what the pp above suggested) and don't have any issues.

Totally agree. I think it looks awful - like they are trying too hard and wasting their money. And ending up 'cookie cutter' ...

But if you're not willing to try and 'embrace' - i.e. go to a curly hair specialist/read naturallycurly.com, etc. then I don't have any advice for you but to tie it back in the summer.

You can't go in a pool with keratin? Did not know that?

Wen. I switched a little over a year ago and love it. I also did my first keratin treatment about a month ago. It took a few weeks for my curl to come back, I have fine, curly hair, but once it did, I've been pretty pleased. I use the keratin shampoo/conditioner but if I hadn't done this, I would stick with the Wen. I use the cleansing conditioner as a leave in and they have a texturizing balm that is great for frizzy flyaways. I have 2 cowlicks at my hairline and it works wonders on those.

Is this okay for color treated hair too?
