Must your kids go to private?
If you move to just about anywhere in Fairfax County, you don't need private schools unless you are chosing to go there for a specific reason like a religious school.

There are some houses that become available in the 700K range and AU Park is not as wealthy as Cleveland Park, but that income is not in the middle for AU Park. It is on the lower end for families of school age children (the families of her children's peers). It is, on the other hand, an ideal location to commute to Bethesda for school. But why buy in AU Park if you do not want the schools.

I think that McLean is ideal. I also live here and, yes, there are many families in the modest rambler neighborhoods surrounding McLean HS whose parent(s) work for the federal government.
Not only are the McLean pyramid schools the very best in Fairfax County, but it is an excellent investment as these neighborhoods continue to appreciate and be converted into teardown havens. Also, having your kids surrounded by some measure of wealthier families makes for great future connections, and teaches them to study and work hard as they aspire to some of what they see around them.

The distance to Bethesda from NoVa is not the issue. You can certainly get from McLean to Bethesda in 30 minutes. The issue is that, in her price range, she'd end up at the low end of the SES spectrum if she manages to find something under $600K there, and that's what she's trying to escape. I think Silver Spring is a better recommendation.

Silver Spring. Easier commute to Bethesda and in our neighborhood, you are probably in the middle to maybe a bit on the lower end, but certainly nothing like Bethesda.

NOt really. I"m the McLean (Turkey Run) poster. My kids go to school in MD, and it's less than 30 minutes. Fairfax is much farther from MD than McLean.

Depends where the school is. We used to be able to make the commute from McLean to Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda in 30 min.
You don't NEED a private if you live in McLean. Wanting one is different, but it's not like half of DC.
