My child showed early talent in tennis. We spent thousands of dollars on developing it. When he became a teenager, he quit playing tounraments and now just plays for high school team. Moral of the story is, don't over invest in children's interests with hopes that it will lead to a career or college scholarship. Support them in their interests to the extent you can and let them make their own decisions.

OP -- you just never know how a child will turn out so don't rule out opportunities based on your own likes/dislikes/predictions. My kid turned out to be an Ivy League athletic recruit. Did I see that in the cards when she was a child? Hell no! Give your kid a chance to excel or not based on his/her desires not yours.

Our K teacher told us that DS had a big talent in math. I thought, OOKK! Turns out, she was right.

While we didn't identify our kids talent when he was young, in retrospect there were clues. Probably could have developed it a bit more if we'd been paying attention.
