Bringing home 70,000 a month and spending 70,000 a month is not the same as bringing home 1,200 a month and spending 1,200 a month, even if the net result at the end of the month in both cases is 0.

Nope. It was nickeling and diming time at Janney in DC, that was $2k per child per year but because DCPS only put a fraction of their per pupil budget to NWDC because the troubled schools get almost double.
In mcps, I will happily submit my property tax bill, illustrate how 80% of it is for MCPS, and how 70% of MCPS budget is for teacher salaries and budgets. If they need more money, they can adjust their "untouchable" all-in comp.

so if not PTA dues, then how would these "expected donations" be given? Just random checks written to the school? I'm confused about what you anticipated.

Seriously, $1,000 per year? So even a small elementary school would be raking in $400k every school year? I cannot honestly believe that you expected to feel pressure to donate that much money.

I have heard of numbers like that in DC, where the PTA can fund teachers aides, but never for MCPS.

OP here -- Good to hear!! I didn't really mean the PTA dues, etc. but if more is "expected." I feel so relieved not to have nanny and preschool bills next year that I'm willing to give our school some funds, but happy if no one if feeling those high expectations. Thanks!

We are at a private. I took total collections/number of kids= our contribution amount. We don't stand out as cheap or well to do.

I join the PTA and support fundraisers..nowhere near $1000..unless you count my volunteer hours.
