OP -- I pay $120 per YEAR for my Trac phone. I get 800 units per year (which I never use and they roll over). that's 800 min. of talk (unless it super long distance or something) and it subtracts 0.3 units for a text.

I see everyone with their smartphones and I would like to have one --- but from what I hear, they are paying around $840 per year for their phones with data (even the lowest data plans). I can't really justify the convenience of having web surfing access for a price of $700+ per year. I would enjoy it, but it's just not worth $700 more than what I pay now.

Trac phone is the most economical for people who are judicious about who they call.

PP here with the $198 bill. I just looked at our bill. It's technically $159/month for all of that, plus $9.99 service fee per line, plus 9.99 per line for insurance.
We've both had our iphones for over a year with no issues so we can probably drop the insurance..

My bf and I are on a "family plan" at Verizon and our bill is $198/month for unlimited talk/text/data. For some reason I have unlimited data and he has 2GB (I am the PP from above who got grandfathered into unlimited data).
Questions:
WTF are we doing wrong? We'll have to pay an arm and a leg to get out of our contract (right?)
If we switch carriers (say we go to Boost or t mobile etc), do we need to get rid of our actual phones and get one from the new carrier?

Additional info: We both text a LOT (well, me more than him), don't talk on the phone often (maybe a few minutes/day to our Moms), and don't use a lot of data- I do like how Verizon sends us a text when the bf is close to using his allowable data (then he knows to stop watching sports on his phone).
I am starting a new job soon in which I'll actually be super-busy so I won't be texting all the time like I am now, so that might be a factor into looking into new plans.

I was paying $50/month for unlimited with Pay as you Go Verizon. I wasn't using my phone much so I just switched to $25 for 250 min per month and then I added $15 for data. I don't use much data so I think it works. Of course, Right after I switched to 250 min/month I went on a trip and used way over that. It then charged me 10 cents a minute, which wasn't bad.

I have a t-mobile prepaid plan; I pay $100 a year for 1,000 minutes ($.10 per text.) I use this with a phone I bought from Target for, I think $80. Works well for me, but then again, I don't use my phone much.

We just got the new tmobile family plan. Unlimited voice and texting, 500mb data for two lines is $80 even.

I'm the Boost pp and yup. I've been with them for years because I don't make a lot of calls or texts (I basically use my phone to run my life and look up numbers/addresses on the go) and so I've been on Shrinkage since they rolled it out. You start at $60 for a smartphone or a Blackberry and it takes 18 months of on time payments to get down to $40. And they do have regular vanilla phones and a Pay as you go plan too.

I finally talked my DH into switching from Verizon. We were paying around 100/month for his line and that was just for talk and text. The only reason he stayed with them for so long was because he wanted a certain type of rugged phone. He had a bad tendency to destroy phones every 6 months, but his Casio Brigade lasted a good 2 years. Now that rugged cases are more affordable and seeing how I was finally able to organize my life thanks to my smartphone, he decided to switch on over to Boost too.

8:21 again. If you get a triple minute phone, you can get a tracfone plan for about 10 cents a minute. It's the cheapest we've found for that level of usage.

The new T-Mobile plans are great, and you don't have to sign a contract. A lot cheaper than AT&T or Verizon, but much better quality than something like Boost.
