I recommend a tankini or at least a top with thick bands/straps. This is all for practical reasons, 2 pieces make going to the bathroom much easier for you when you are also trying to watch a child and the thick straps will help prevent a wardrobe malfunction when you are picking up/carrying the child. Have a great summer with the little one.

We've never had a nanny before, but if we did, I wouldn't care at all. But my son always pulls on my swimsuit, so I tend to wear a tankini to lessen the chance of sharing too much with the other pool goers.

Ok, I've been the slim and fit nanny, although it wasn't uncommon way back then (the 80s) to wear a one piece. Do they even make one piece bathing suits anymore? Anyway, what about a tankini or a two piece, athletic looking/ cut two piece like the lifeguards wear? That might be a good compromise.

yes, there are still a lot of cute one-pieces. even trina turk, marc jacobs, st. john etc. make them. i prefer a one-piece bc im thin but soft and i always get compliments on them. not all of them are matronly.

imo tankinis are more matronly than fashionable one-pieces.

You may get a raise from dh but not monetary

I am a nanny in her early 30s. In nearly 13 years of being a nanny and swimming with all of my charges on a regular basis I have only worn bikinis. It is what I am comfortable in. All of my employers have been fine with my choice of swimwear.

For all of my jobs prior to my current one I traveled extensively with the families, and all but one had a pool. I never even hesitated wearing bikinis around my employers. All of them had secure self images and none of my MBs were concerned about me wearing a bikini around their husbands.

If I get a sense during an interview that a family is on the conservative side or there might be insecurity issues going on I make sure to ask about their preferred attire, including swimwear. It's an easy, quick conversation.

There are lots of different kinds of bikinis. I would have no problem with any that my nanny was comfortable with, with a 19-month-old-- who cares?

But personally, I am comfortable wearing my practical, no slip, no cleavage (not that I could ever drum much up anyway) Speedo bikini with my toddler and baby at the pool. I would not be comfortable wearing a tiny string bikini. But I don't judge the nannies or moms at the pool with barely there bikinis. There tend not to even be any men at the pool during the weekday, so it's not like a meat market or anything.

Why not ask the family you work for? If they have clothing expectations for you on dry land, they may in water too. If they don't care, neither should you!
