Looks like YY sent out a few emails today! We were thrilled to get ours, so their waitlist is definitely moving and we will be sending our Pre-Ker to Yu Ying! We're not giving up a slot at Sela though (we didn't apply to Sela).

We are giving up a great waitlist spot at another school though, so as soon as we fill out the paperwork for YY, we are going to let the other charter know, and make some people on the waitlist there very happy, since we'll be removing our names from that list (and I have a hunch that list will move much less than YYs). I will definitely post which school after the paperwork is in.

Did you apply to Sela? If Hebrew immersion is something you would consider, might want to try to apply (I applied late and got into pre-k) and it seems like a really good program. And, it sounds like several people (myself included) are giving it up for Yu Ying. That said, I was starting to get very excited about Sela (including the free after school care) so you might want to try applying if you really don't want to move.

Got in nowhere. All very high WL numbers. Doing private preschool and will try again next year, but now seriously thinking charters are not a realistic option and not sure what we will do. Don't want to move....

My child attends AppleTree Amidon and my older kids did as well. I have found it fabulous and actually extremely structured and organized. If you go during centers time, it can look disorganized because they have more freedom and are learning through play and socializing. We can't say enough great things about the southwest apple tree schools. My kids left their program already reading and were extremely advanced in kindergarten and ever since. You made the day of someone on their wait list I am sure, giving up that spot.

ONly if the trend of young families leaving DC picks up will anything substantive be done about the schools.

As long as families are buying home in gentrifying areas and willing to fight to get their kids in a decent school, the dc gov will let you do the work of improving education here. They have obviously proved that they are incapable of it.

And we know they never cared about the poor kids - so DCPS and the charter board are counting on you to do the work to improve the schools with your well-behaved, high-vocabulary kids.

The DC area already has the highest concentration of college grads in the country. If that number increases dramatically in the city, then we will have the best performing schools in the country -- thanks to parents fighting for their kids' education.

But you won't get the credit -- DCPS will. Henderson and Rhee will be heaped with accolades for all their hard work on school reform, when really all they did was lie, cheat and let poor kids get pushed out.

AppleTree Lincoln Park has been fabulous for PreS3. Classrooms are bigger than at Amidon and really organized. We're definitely staying for PreK.
