About 50% of the kids go back to their home schools for middle school. My child had a good experience at Barnsley HGC (though I can't compare it to your private situation of course). Since PP did not provide any details about her concerns/issues with Barnsley so it is hard to know where she is coming from. I guess it depends on your reasons for choosing private to start with and how important the tution dollars are to you. I am guessing the kids at the HGCs representing the top 2-3% of MCPS kids would be hard to replicate at most private schools though.

Many kids want to not leave peers either. Then you have the kids teachers recommend to get them out of their school. My child child left after one year of HCG. It is not what it is cracked up to be. I would never leave private for HCG unless you were unhappy to begin with.

I would stick with private. Barnsley is not a school I would want to send my private school kid too. HGC or not.

I don't have a child in a HGC but my child in MS is suffering from a totally non-intellectural curriculum in general ed and it was my understanding that the curric is similar if not the same for HGC, just that gifted go deeper or something like that. if I feel if it aint broke don't fix it.

Pinecrest. Son loves our private.
