You'd be surprised how many people lease luxury cars because they just can't afford to buy them. Or their companies pay for them.

OP, you don't mention if you have kids. If so, I think a crossover would be a good idea. Otherwise, get a sedan. Look at certified used luxury cars if you want to spurge for something nicer. A guy at the Lexus dealership recently said that families with $200K incomes typically spend $40-50K on their car, thus the popularity of the RX. But you don't have that income or savings, so I would spend less if you don't something large.

Rovers are so bourgeois. Personally, I'm keen on hyundais and kias. great cars for great prices. contrary to popular belief, the truly rich spend wisely.

OP, I love cars and would shell out 40-60k if I were you.. esp if you spend an awful lot of time in it (i happen to)

If you can save $1500 per month, OP, then why not wait a year then pay cash for a $40,000 car? Make it a 41st birthday present.

Really! Luxury cars are everywhere! I just returned from a trip to another state. Not a poor state, but you just do not see the luxury cars on evry street like you do here.

Find something you like and buy it. Cars are expensive, but I enjoy driving mine everyday. I have a Lexus. So worth it to me.

Hi OP: I too am 39 and just purchased my first car in 16 years! Given my income, net worth, and my tendency to keep a car for 16 years, I thought a good long time before purchasing. I also, over the past few years, have rented for road trips b/c I do not trust my 16 yr old car.

I purchased a crossover b/c it was my favorite when renting and spent about 34K. I felt guilty. But I LOVE IT! good luck.

We kept the 16 yr old (and now are a 2 car fam) and when that dies, we will likely get a used seden hybrid type thing and only spend about 20. and we hope that's years from now. Our old car that just won't die. And doesn't even break expensively.

If she wants to treat herself and buy a nice car (and can afford it) she should be able to. Some folks like driving a real car (no one on here seems to read jalopnik.com) and aren't happy with their boring economical pos. life is short.

Btw I make more then the op and drive a 2004 Honda civic. Someday I'll splurge when I find the right car that they sell in the US. Right now I'm ok with what I have.
