When I went to dcps in the 1980 s kids were not allowed to give gifts. It was seen as bribing.

DD is 9 and at a D.C. private. She told me and the teacher didn't think anything of admitting to me that she questioned her and that she thinks a little "peer motivation" will "teach" my DD not to have the learning disability. That was her reasoning for the public shaming. Unbelievable!

I don't understand the high-end bribery with gift cards and expensive presents. The important aspect of the giving gesture is authenticity of feeling, and you can't buy that at Coach or Macy's.

If I really feel a teacher's been a great help to us on a family level, I ask what she really needs for the classroom and then I get her that.


How does an end of year gift show a bribe? You are letting you child pick from all free gifts...which is fine...it's a gift at least.
