OP here. I did as one of the first PPs suggested and cut the root off the sprouts, rinsed them and cut them in half before roasting. (I really only was looking for cleaning/prep advice, but I appreciate all of the cooking suggestions.)

Roasted with garlic and olive oil, then tossed with balsamic vinegar. Yes, the house does smell of them afterward. It's lovely.

I roast mine at 375 with olive oil, salt, garlic and SHALLOTS!!!

I'm in love with shallots these days.

There are lots of recipes for roasting brussels sprouts and it my preferred way but it does give them a stronger taste and may also smell up the house. Maple syrup and bacon are nice additions. Easiest way to cook them is to put them in the microwave with some water and steam them for about 4 minutes, works fine, tender, milder, more like cabbage.
