I tried it during labor I didn't find it especially helpful although it might have been because I wasn't using it properly. Once I was on Pitocin my contractions became excruciating and I was so exhausted (I'd been in labor for 15 hours) I ended up getting an epidural.

I'd liken nitrous to being ravenously hungry and eating one cracker to try and satiate hunger while the epidural was like an all-you-can-eat buffet

You might be dodging a bullet.
Some people find it highly disagreable and nauseating. DS was given some at the dentist and promptly threw up on the dentist.
But I agree the option should be available.

Nitrous at the hospital is mixed 50/50 with oxygen. Whippets are straight nitrous. So, no, you can't just go to Sur La Tab. The concentration at the dentist is higher too (I think 80% nitrous), which is why you can't use it there but can for labor.

They provide gas at Washington Hospital Center now.

INOVA Alexandria offered it to me in Dec 2016 so definitely available there.

Definitely WHC and Inova Alexandria per their website.

I heard Inova Alexandria has it now.
