OP, allergic reactions to fish tend to develop in adulthood, so yes it could have been an allergic reaction. Also, you can have anaphylaxis and not die from it. The majority of people who die from anaphylaxis have asthma. So if you have asthma you need to be extra careful until you get to see an allergist.

Be aware that some restaurants fry fish in the same fryer as other foods, so you may need to avoid all fried foods.

I highly doubt you would have a panic attack right after eating a fish sandwich.

I am 100% sure it was an analyphalactic reaction and you could have suffocated. Thank God you only ate 1 sandwich.

Get allergy tested ASAP.
Even if you are not allergic to fish per say, you need to understand that many seafoods are manufactured w/other seafoods so if you are allergic to crab and crab is manufactured w/fish somewhere, you can get a reaction.

RN here and I agree w your aunt. Yes to all of your questions. I see it a lot in urgent care. Could it be a panic attack? Sure. But it sounds like anaphylaxis and the next time could be worse. Ditch that dr.

OP, do get tested. But if it isn't an allergy, maybe it was heartburn. It can feel like that (I know from personal experience...and when it happened I thought I was dying).

A study of 5 sandwiches from fast food restaurants all had mercury levels in them, some at unacceptable levels. Google McDonald's fish sandwich mercury poisoning and hit on a few links. It you had any dizziness along with the choking, it may be this. Check the symptoms to see if they correlate with your one.

You are a moron they are made from cod and contain no more mercury then anything else. Also mercury poisoning is a gradual not a sudden thing.

Yet another example of a DCUM poster who lacks decorum. Don't you think name calling is a bit sophomoric? We're reasonably intelligent people, can't we disagree in a civilized manner.

OP, a fried fish sandwich, an orange soda, and a large order of fries? C'mon. This is the toxic waste of lunch orders.

Thanks for all the advice and the laughs as well. LOL.

It is hard as hell since I love fast food fried fish, but I guess part of getting old is having to gradually do w/out the things in life that I once took for granted.
There is this Fish & Chips place across the street that has the best fried fish ever...man put some lemon and pepper on those babies and....life is perfect.

I am Asian so this will be a hard change for me.

I am going to see a Dr. and try to get tested. I hope a specialist will allow me to get a Epi~pen because I don't feel secure only taking Benadryl.

Don't get worried about a fishless existance until you have seen the doctor and gotten tested

Hoki is no longer in Filet-o-fish sandwiches as of 2013 it's Pollock, because of sustainability issues.

You can get tested for allergic reactions. Get a referral from your doctor.

And mercury poisoning can be either acute or chronic. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00014464.htm
