The question pp is in which decade did you last visit NH? It is a slum -- why do you insist otherwise?

14:50 - In what decade did you last visit the Yale campus? It really isn't that much different from NW DC, excluding Kent and Spring Valley.

I also don't think New Haven is any more dangerous for women than for men. [Big state schools where (male) athletes are revered as gods might be more dangerous for women, but that's because of the mentality of the students, not the towns.]

Harvard is very overrated for undergrad education (unless of course you really just care about reputation).

I think Yale does a better job socially with minorities than P. A couple of my asian friends did not enjoy P socially in the early 2000's.

To the poster who asks what "hooks" get into Yale, in our recent experience, athletic recruits, diversity, children of alumni (but only some of them who also are very very strong students and leaders), children of famous people, and then kids that are truly brilliant and well on their way to be true scholars, not simply kids who score well on tests and have great grades, so clearly teacher recommendations and school recommendations saying "this kid is really special" plays a role. Harvard being really really rich seems to help the most, along with alumni connections, seems to make up for not being the best of all possible students.

I assume this kid also got in to Dartmouth based on the Dartmouth IR post. So 4 top ivies. Impressive.

This might be true for a kid coming from rural Iowa who has no idea what a city is like, but New Haven is pretty similar to DC and the campus area is much like downtown DC. I went to Yale in the 90's and it was a bit rough around the edges, but it is quite different today. What were scruffy restaurants and local dives around campus then are things like Urban Outfitters and an Apple store today. I kind of wish it weren't so upscale now because it is more generic. It's not a small town like Princeton, but dangerous? Not really.

Parent of junior here who just toured Yale. If anyone is willing to share, I'd be interested in profile stats of kids who were accepted and the hooks or extra-currics -- what packages were successful.
