Seconding what a poster above said. A bunch of us in AU Park are trying to organize a bus for next year. It appears the likelihood of having enough interested families is much higher this year than in previous years. If you're interested, even if you are currently on the wait-list and are uncertain, do get in touch.

Go with Janney or move closer to YY.

Yes move to Petworth!!!!

Parents are planning to organize a bus from upper NW this coming year...just had an email go out about it a few weeks ago. If you call the school, they can put you in touch with the transportation committee.

Wow, $220/month for bus service, $400+ for aftercare and you're starting to talk about some real money.

Cool! That is awesome.

Is this the same as the Chinatown bus? Do they offer wifi?

Some Chevy Chase / AU Park families use the bus on a "drop in" basis by driving to Mt Pleasant for the 7:45 stop in the am.
Each year demand for additional routes and stops is evaluated by parent coordinators. AU/Chevy Chase always seem to come close to having critical mass but come up just short.

There is another bus route, on the Hill. That one does a morning trip, but I think (hopefully someone will chime in on this) there is a choice between two evening trips: one right after school, and the other after REEF (aftercare). Also, I think that one is the vans, not the yellow "Starfleet" schoolbus.

The upper NW neighborhoods have critical mass for a bus, however not enough have committed to it to make a viable route - yet. (I think the magic number is 10.) There are a lot of carpools. It's pretty easy to organize carpools, there's a google map that goes around at the beginning of the year so people can plot their coordinates.

FWIW, there are many pre-k kids who ride the bus. We have bus monitors this year so in addition to the driver there is another adult on the bus to keep an eye on behavior.

Thanks everyone for the info on the bus. That makes it a much better option for us, especially since we live in Mt. Pleasant. Although my daughter would be entering the PK class, and I don't think she would be okay on the bus alone (at least at first), so might hop on the H8 w/her for a while and then when she is older/more comfortable go for the bus. Or is it possible for me to ride on the bus at first with her?

That's great that they pick up at aftercare, too. I'm really impressed at the level of parent coordination.

The info above regarding the bus is correct. There is morning pick up and two afternoon runs, one after school and one after aftercare. We negotiate the contract yearly with the bus company so routes and prices could change for next year. And we can most likely add stops/routes if there is enough critical mass in a certain area.

For beginning of school year 2011, the bus fee from U. St. was $220 per month or $110 one way. Pick up time was 7:30. This information may have changed by now (someone correct me if info is incorrect), but I thought this would be helpful as a baseline of information for you. Hopefully someone currently using the bus can give you updated information.

This thread is really helpful. I live in CCDC and have a high wait-list number for YY (and we didn't get into our local DCPS) so am hopeful that YY will work out, but was also worried about the transportion issue. Hopefully there will be enough kids this year in the AU/CC area to warrant a bus stop.

Lighten up, it was a joke based on YYs application process. I'm a NP and not even at YY yet, and I still got it!
