Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. The real harm of AA is that URM's that could have made it without AA are lumped those who couldn't.

So your assumption is that URM students only get into college by virtue of AA? I guess that lumps you in with all of the people calling for the president's grades.

No. I will explain this to you. Many people who are/were in a position of hiring (myself included) discount an ivy league degree held by a URM based on the very reasonable assumption that the URM benefited from AA. We KNOW that URM students do NOT only get into college by virtue of AA because URM students got into Ivy League schools long before AA, but we also KNOW that most URM students benefited from AA. From a typical resume, there is no way to KNOW which URM would have gotten into an Ivy League school without AA. This is a reality that plagues those URM would have gained admittance without AA. But, again, as a person who hires and promotes, I can tell you that college pedigree does NOT directly correlate to workplace success.

So yeah, I do think that President Obama got into Columbia and Harvard because of his skin tone. I also think George W. Bush got into Yale and HBS because of his family connections. Call me crazy.

And Obama was elected President because of his skin color! Yeah, right. The only reason you think Obama was some kind of AA student is racism pure and simple. he has proven over and over again that he's the most intelligent guy in the room.

By the way, you could and should be sued for such hiring practices. From a resume, there is no way to KNOW is a student was accepted to an ivy because he was an athlete, the child of a big donor, a legacy, whatever. But its only the applicants of color you discount, right? Presumably these schools give everyone the same education regardless of how they got there.

since applicants do not take the same courses, attend the same schools and have the same teachers absolute grades (without confidence intervals) should not be the decisive factor and neither should bogus multiple choice tests be the holy grail. Interviews, grades, essays, accomplishes and achievements and recommendations should all weigh in the final decision.

Why should males get preferential treatment in admissions? Men have more opportunities and make more money than woman for the same or similar work. They already receive a huge social benefit by their gender. Education is one way where females can try to gain more opportunities, opportunities that typically go to males.

What a wonderful HR policy. Except that it's illegal. How about some good behavioral interviewing skills?

He said that SOME URM got into college by virtue of AA. How can that be at all controversial? I do believe that there is some damage done through association if you lower the bar too much though.

The practice of race based discrimination is shameful and stupid. Creating opportunity for the disadvantaged is a good thing.

I would not say it is shameful or stupid because at the time of inception 50+ years ago, it was necessary and with laudable intent. It is obsolete now because of the point of your first paragraph. There are other ways to create a diverse class.

I have a DD in 11th grade who is at the beggining of the process and I absolutely want schools to use "affirmative actIOn" for boys. I can't imagine a more unhealthy social dynamic than one where the girls far outnumber the boys and therefore the boys can treat the girls badly because they will still be in demand. This is an example of how affirmative action helps everyone. I feel the same way about other forms of affirmative action. I do not want my daughter going to a monolithic school.

Come back and tell us how you feel when your daughter with better grades and test scores is rejected while a slacker boy is admitted.

This is a straw man. There are many excellent schools and DD will go to one. She is not entitled to admission anywhere. And I have better things to do than scrutinize students to create grievances.

Hopefully your daughter will feel the same.

Well she doesn't want to go to a school where the women are fighting over the men.

AA will be shameful to liberals soon, I hope. I say this as someone who is liberal on must subjects. Just not discrimination.
