I don't know if this is true. My child had high scores in 2 and lower than the average on 1 and still got in.
Maybe it also has to do with filling spots...they just take the highest performers for each HGC?

The scores are the median for all accepted children. By definition half the kids will have a lower score than the median on every measure.

How do you know that there is a qualifying grade?

So does any child who scores above the median in all three sections get in? Or does it still depend on teacher recommendations, grades, etc?

I am guessing since the median is higher than the qualifying grade the chances would be really, really, really good. The teacher recommendation, grades, parent recommendations serves to give a better idea of the candidate. However, these grades and recommendations are subjective - they can not be quantified easily. Perhaps, they become useful when they have candidates with similar results. How they are weighted in the decision making process is anybody's guess though.
