That is a great idea. One of my neighbors volunteers with them. I am going to suggest it.

There are a TON of houses currently being renovated in Petworth, which is super close to Takoma. North Petworth is also the new location of Latin.

Comstock is building a new housing community of 38 single family homes and 73 townhomes called The Hampshires right around the corner from Sela and near CapCity too - http://comstockhomes.com/hampshire.php

Peabody Street already has 6 or so new houses up and people starting to move in so there's some great development going on in this area.

You should check out Takoma, NE and Lamond Riggs, NE. The school is Takoma, NE - Lamond Riggs is literally across the street and has single family brick Federalist style homes - very affordable - off of North Capitol - multiple houses appeared to be available for sale when we did our "dry run" commute test last week.

120 Whittier St NW is now for sale.....it's a block from us and we're in a great part of Takoma DC. Lots of families with young children. We love our enclave and it's walking distance to everything.
