NOT the walk in preschools. The cattiest, least secure moms are there.
Definitely "like-minded" (read: $$$) moms at like-minded preschools. You will know it when you see it!

I throw themed playdates for our moms group. i don't think its that strange or unusual. For St. Patricks day the kids all wore green and I served Irish themed appitizers for the Moms. It was a lot of fun for the Moms and the kids looked so cute.

OP, I get it. I have a great group of mom friends that I actually would have liked prekids, too. We met at a new mom support group when we all had newborns. They are all turning 5 now!!
We were part of a much larger group, and when our babies aged out of the official "support group" a smaller group of us (10) formed our own group. We have weekly play dates, monthly moms night outs and girls weekends 2x year.
I totally lucked out though and have no idea where you find this otherwise. I will say that I've also met some great, fun ladies at DD's preschool - actually a great argument for a school with no carline. You meet many more people if everyone has to go inside!

OP, although it's in DC, you may consider checking out the Politics & Prose Bookstore cafe. They have free wi-fi. But watch our for sneering servers behind the counter.

I'm not going to touch the whole "cool mom" thing... but I will say you will probably have an easier time meeting a bigger crop of moms if/when you put your little ones in a preschool program - try to choose one with a 'walk-in' drop off rather than a curbside/teacher pickup style drop off - the walking in and waiting for the few minutes for pick-up outside class is a nice opportunity to socialize.
