Btw- neither of my DSs made a peep. Our mohel, Dr marmon, uses a topical anesthetic as well as a little wine

Mom of 2 Jewish boys here. I always stand in the back, whether it's my son or another child. It's horrible! But, as Jews it's a must.
It'll be over fast and then you party. Your friend may not be around much after (prob hiding with the baby) so don't expect to socialize with her. Is she a really good friend? I had a few of mine come upstairs with me and hang out in the baby's room. With my second DS, I was more relaxed.

I always bring a gift, because I always give a gift for a new baby, and this is a good time to do it. If this is not someone you were planning to give a new baby gift to, then don't bring a gift.
People crowd around in a circle for the actual ceremony, which is less than 5 minutes long, and I find an obstructed view place to stand.
Afterwards there is usually a lunch. I think it's really nice to have a formal framework to welcome a new baby.

OP, dress nicely, no jeans or sneakers - like you're going out to dinner (but no tits or ass showing). People gave us some religious gifts at our son's naming (bris was at the hospital before we went home from his birth), but many didn't.
Stand when others stand, sit when others sit. They'll announce his hebrew name. Don't worry if you don't understand what they said - half the time I don't either.
Be careful when you're about to eat or drink - a prayer may be said first. Just make sure you're not the first to take a sip or bite. Don't ask to see the penis.

Just carry a larger purse and put a smaller wrapped gift inside it. If nobody brought gifts then don't take yours out and save it for later or give it to the mom during a quiet moment at the party or leave it in the nursery and tell mom when you leave.

I've always brought a gift to a bris. The service is very short. Once the Mohel has circumcised the baby, it becomes more of a social gathering and celebration for the family and friends there. Food is usually served, bagels and fish is the norm. You don't need to force a "mazel tov". You can say congratulations, give your friend a hug and call it a day. Enjoy.
