OP, he won't get into a decent college if he doesn't improve his grades. He should go to a community college where other lazy kids go until he improves his grades and then try to transfer to a decent college.

There are so, so many colleges out there. A good college is the best fit for your kid. Don't fall into the snobby DC area hellish pit of fire in this regard.

My child asked me to take the TV out her room as it was useless....kids watch movies, chat, play games and do homework on the same device they use to access and submit schoolwork so NOW what? Motivation HAS to be internal, at some point
That being said, this school sounds like a bad fit for your son

Hopefully the OP helped the boy change schools at some point over the past two years. (This is a 2+ year old post.)

college teacher here. "homework" will be 10-25% of your son's grades in college. I teach literature and homework means reading responses. Every semester I have smart students who write brilliant papers but who didn't read the books they didn't write on. They get Cs. This isn't going to change for him. He needs to do his homework.

My husband works with brilliant computer coders who don't do documentation (it is tedious and boring); their careers stagnate. This isn't going to change for him.

Maybe a school with better homework, less busy work?

godo luck. It is impossible to make people do things they don't want to do (I have a stubborn son too). Don't make it your fight. Hopefully he will learn in his own time.

My daughter had GPA of 3.49 and sat's of 2200. We were warned that gpa would hurt her chances and it did. Nice selection of schools for her but not stellar. She's doing amazing in college though, but yes, it counts way more than you think.

I was this was too. My grades improved dramatically when I went off to big state U and the profs didn't care about giving students pointless busywork. I would agree with the PP who mentioned looking into changing schools.

Well he's shot himself in the foot as far as the "top" colleges are concerned but he can still get into a good one if he starts doing his homework an gets mostly all As. He'll need to do *very* well on SATs though.

Unless he changes, yes, he will have a difficult time getting into a good college.
