yes, but the great charters are almost impossible to get into unless you already have a sibling there. look at the public school forum around DCPS and charters lottery time and you will see how stressed out people from not so great school districts are. we have two kids and considered Brookland, and ended up buying in CCDC (3 bd for around 700 BTW). our kids go to a great IB school and will have good schools up to HS, the area is relatively safe and low crime, close to transportation so my commute dowtown is short (in the good season I bike), lots of playgrounds, shopping, things to do for kids and adults (politics and prose, the avalon theater, the library and community center), tons of families with kids, a great sense of community. I am not sure what you mean with uptight. at least our neighboors and the people we know in the area are fairly laid back, mostly working parents with little kids or older teenagers, no energy left to tighten up anyting.

prices in CCDC have been fairly steady, even during the crash in 2008, unlike Brookland, so I am not sure about the overprice. Brookland is very nice but you pay less because you get less (especially if you have kids and need to rely on DCPS)

20016 has more on the market right now on that price range. Very similar feel to CC.

Houses have come on in that price range every week for the last several weeks (usually in the high 800s). They go within a few days. If OP wants to see six houses on at once and thinks she can take her time and weigh all her options, that doesnt seem to be the market this year.

Is this because you think the Feds will address sequestration before people are actually furloughed, the potential number of furloughed employees is low or because you so not think Feds live in this neighborhood. Feds live in these neighborhoods, granted on the higher ends of the payscale.

I didn't post this earlier, but I don't think the sequester/furlough will impact the area at all. First, there aren't many govt workers or contractors in CC (if any area would suffer, it would be NoVa, where there are more feds and contractors). Second, I don't think any agencies are planning on furloughing employees for more than 14-21 days. People who can afford to live in CC can afford to go two to three weeks without pay without worrying about losing their homes. Perhaps they won't take a vacation this year, but the furlough won't have a serious impact on this area.

No. Brookland is ugly. It's remote. And it's incredibly boring! Seriously, there's not a damn thing to do there except go to Menomale or that tiny Cuban restaurant. CCDC is indeed uptight and staid, but to call it "boring" with the implication that Brookland is jumping is ridiculous.

Also, Brookland is denuded of trees and 9 out of 10 homes are eyesores. 60 years worth of lower middle class DIY "updates" to homes will take a while to undo. Metal awnings, anyone? Astroturf porches? Cheap siding? Chain link fences! Oh, and garish colors. I've never seen so many Sesame Street green siding homes.
