My mom's rule was 9 for the piercing and 12 to wear anything "dangly" -- so basically just studs for ages 9-11. I think that was a good compromise.

I was 26 and already a mom myself when I did it. For some reason I imagined my mom would be angry when she found out, because every time I mentioned it as a teenager, she would dissuade me with horror stories about how infected hers got.

I was 8 when I got mine, but I danced and part of our competition costume was huge earrings so everyone got theirs done.

6 months for my girls.

Age 10 for our family. No problems so far.

Let my daughter get them on her 8th bday. She was plenty careful with cleaning them and was so proud to get them done.

I really don't see a need to tighten the reins on this issue, but I'm sure I have another issue somewhere that people think I'm too strict on.

+1 I said I'd wait until age 12 but, gave in at age 8 for some suburban life changing milestone I have forgotten. Our dermatologist said the lady at Piercing Pagoda at the Mall, of all places, had much more experience than he did. We celebrated with great flare at California Pizza Kitchen. Ugh.

My parents made me wait until I was a senior in high school! I think 8 or 10 yrs old is just fine so long as she understands the responsibility of taking care of them.

She just got them done at 9. Figured why make her wait til 10 or 12. She has been great about taking care of them. My parents made me wait til 15. I think that is ridiculous but my parents are very old fashioned and white bread.

My parents not only made me wait til I was a teen, but refused to let me go to the mall like my friends. Insisted that my dad do it. Ok, he's a doctor, and has pierced thousands of ears and takes it very seriously not only in terms of hygiene but also placement and direction, but still. (I came to appreciate this later, and will have him pierce my daughter's ears when she's ready. She will be allowed to make that decision herself... after hearing dire stories of how painful it is, how hard they are to take care, etc etc. )

My mom finally relented and let my dad take my sister and me to get our ears pierced when we were 14 and 15. She refused to take us and see us "have our bodies mutilated." I had a good time ribbing her when she got her ears mutilated at the age of 80.
