Disneyland is one maybe two days. San Diego has the beach and a ton of other stuff. Universal is really for older kids. Personally I'm from California and although I like some thinks about So Cal including Disneyland and Joshua Tree and Malibu and the Getty Museum and San Diego Zoo and Santa Barbara...but I loathe Los Angeles in general (smog, traffic, the entire nation's supply of stupid plastic people, West Hollywood grit anyone?)

We love Disneyland AND travel with booze. You really should if you are doing any form of Disney.

OP, we stay at the Embassy Suites. They have a shuttle tithe park, rooms fits is all, breakfast is included and reasonably priced. For us 3 days is good. One for each park then one to go back and forth. You could also do Legoland.

I find it much more mentally manageable than Disney World. We have also done Europe. My oldest is 12 so it really is no question about what they enjoy more. Always Disney.

Sure, if we are going by car. We travel a lot, and my husband makes a mean drink. It is hard to find some of the better ingredients, and it saves a ton of money for a much better quality drink. And, he brings some travel tools for the road. We've met many friends - some of whom we have kept for years and met up with in other places in the world when paths cross - by offering interesting seeming people an unexpected, but awesome drink.


Drinking seems to play a major role in your lives.

If you want to go to Disneyland, you might also check prices on flights going into Long Beach Airport (LGB). Jet Blue has direct flights from IAD. I went to high school in Orange county, and just recently purchased a flight to go to my reunion this summer--Jet Blue into LGB. I think I paid $300-something round trip for one ticket.


Thanks. Already a done deal, though. And San Diego was main goal, Disneyland is just a one day diversion for the kids.

We just canceled our Disney trip. Driving, here's what I figured for four of us:

Gas, food and hotel on the road: $600
Hotel (one room) in Orlando: $1000
Tickets for four people, four days to Disney, Universal Studios, Seaworld, or whatever we decide: $1100
Food in Orlando (I have teens so no kids meals!): $1000

So that's easily a $4000 trip, even without flying. If you flew and rented a car, add another $1500.

You could save a lot on food if you stayed in a condo and made your own breakfast or stayed in a hotel that offered breakfast.

If I was at a hotel and a stranger offered me a drink they had made in their room (as opposed to offering to pay for a drink made by the bartender at the hotel bar)--there is no way I'd take it. Maybe I'm paranoid...

Disneyland is a 3-day experience. One day in Magic Kingdom, one day in California Adventure, one day to toggle between.
