I grew up in MD, lived in DC for about 10 years post-college and bought a house in VA 3 years ago.
If you are renting and have no kids, live in the city. You will pay higher rent and taxes, but if you can swing it, do it. You have the rest of your life to live in the burbs. Just make sure you are aggressively saving money to buy a house.
If you are thinking of buying or have kids, I'd say Virginia. I think Montgomery County is more attractive than much of Fairfax and Arlington, but the number of public universities in Virginia far outnumber those in Maryland. If you are wealthy and can afford the cost of college out of pocket, you can pick and choose.

OP, why did you not think it would be possible? Honestly, if you're really looking for (your words) more "urban" and "young professional," live in the District. Look at Logan Circle, U St Corridor, and NoMa. I would venture to say that living in DC proper now is the best its been since, well, EVER. It's really undergone a revival. Plus you'd both have reverse commutes.
