If you go with a high quality, thick wool rug, you can easily clean it and it will be comfortable to work on. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but spending more on a good quality rug or runner will make life easier in the end.

We vacuum once every couple of days and that takes care of any crumbs. Green machine anything that spills, good as new.

Rugs in the kitchen make me a little crazy. They are nothing but crumb-catchers. So to clean, you must sweep the floor AND shake out or vacuum the rugs. And they are usually stained and dirty. Huge pet peeve of mine.

FLOR or indoor/outdoor only. Anything else will stain. If it doesn't stain, the rug is made of cheap plastic and looks cheap. Those inexpensive rugs look inexpensive. I think it's better to spend a little more (only a little) and get something durable with a more classic look.

I use FLOR tiles around two side of my island. Easy to clean and easy to make it whatever size and shape I wanted. Love them. Super durable and make standing in the kitchen easier on my knees. Also protects wood floor from spills scratches and dents.

Get an indoor outdoor rug. I have on in our kitchen and get tons if compliments on it. Hose it down outside if it gets dirty. The best ones I have found and at great prices are on websites like "Joss and Main" and "One Kings Lane." Best choice by far!

I always put cheapy Ikea rugs under the kitchen table. You can usually find a good sized one for $15-$20 and they clean up pretty well. When something disastrous happens to it, I don't feel too guilty binning it in favor of a new one.

Gel mat in front of the stove, natural fiber rug (sisal or hemp, can't remember) under the table, because our chairs were scraping the floor.

I love my hardwood in the kitchen, but get something in front of the sink. All the drips take a toll on the floor. Gel mats or similar are the best since they're easy to clean.

we also have and love an indoor/outdoor rug from ballard in the kitchen... they have several pattern and size choices.. and just hose off.

Hardwood in the kitchen gets a lot of wear and tear. Better to go with a rubber-backed rug.
