I'd be surprised, but 8th grade girls can ovulate. If they ovulate and have sex, they can get pregnant. I hope this doesn't happen frequently, but you shouldn't be totally surprised by it.

Urban, largely poor middle school in Silver Spring here. No pregnant girls, at least not that I know of since DS has been there.

I'm in Bethesda, and unless it was a close friend of my child, I'd be surprised because I'd expect parents to rush the girl for an abortion and cover it up.

I'm not naive enough to think there has never been a pregnant girl at the school.

On the other hand, I teach in a small public school in DC. We haven't yet had a pregnant middle school girl that has chosen to carry, but we have plenty of families where mom is 13 - 15 years older than the oldest child. My heart aches for those young moms.

Do you think they should continue to go to school when they "show" or should they leave school and take classes at home?

I went to a private Catholic all girls' HS and we had one girl in our class who got pregnant. There were probably a few others too but they had abortions. It is fairly common in Baltimore City though. It is a cycle.

OP here. I've definitely seen the stats on teen pregnancy, but 8th grade seems SO young. I'm just wondering how common this is in the everyday. I went to Catholic school growing up and we never had pregnant kids in school. Seriously ... Does that answer what rock I was living under?

If I live in Howard county or Montgomery county I would be surprised. If I lived in Baltimore or Caroline county then not so much.

I suspect there are girls in our Bethesda HS who get pregnant. Don't hear about any having babies though. Draw your own conclusions.

I grew up in Howard County. I had a 13 year old friend who had a baby.

2 girls in high school were pregnant (Atholton). They continued at the high school until giving birth. The fathers were all adults.

There are 3 that I am aware of (which means the kids found out somehow) in our MoCo public school. 8th grade, none that I know of in 7th, one in 6th.

Most pregnant middle school girls stop going to school when it is obvious and take classes from home. Well I was told they don't see the girls anymore at school.

3 out of 300 just to give you an idea of percentage.

When a relative was going through the adoption process in the area, there were two babies born to 12-year-olds who were being put up for adoption.

None in my kids middle school (DCPS) that I know of. Id probably be surprised but not shocked if it did happen. There was a pregnant girl in my middle school and that was back in the early 80's in a small mid western town. My cousin got pregnant when she was 12.

A friend is a guidance counselor at a MoCo middle school (and no, not Westland or Pyle). She tells me that several girls get pregnant every year. We're talking 7th and 8th graders...

I graduated mont. cty HS 25 yrs ago. One girl had a baby in 10th and a bunch were preg at graduation.

No pregnant girls that I've heard of at our Big Three.
