I am not a Fed but just wanted to say sorry to all of you. Even if you think the government needs to be downsized, there is a right way and a wrong way to achieve that. This is most definitely the wrong way. Hopefully the impacts will be swift enough for Congress to pull their collective head out of their collective ass.

We'd be happy with a furlough. We just got the letter that my husband will be terminate as well as everyone on his contract in less they get funded. 14 days off is better than months, if not longer.

PP here -- this is what I was thinking of. It applies to furloughs scheduled around holidays, not to leave scheduled around furlough days. Sorry for the confusion.
From the OPM's administrative guidance on furloughs:
Q. If employees have a designated administrative furlough day off on the last workday before a holiday and the first workday after a holiday, will they be paid for the holiday?
A. No. If a furlough includes both the last workday before the holiday and the first workday after the holiday, the employee is not entitled to pay for the holiday because there is no longer a presumption that, but for the holiday, the employee would have worked on that day. (See Comptroller General opinion B-224619, August 17, 1987.) Agencies that allow employees to choose their furlough days off should explain that the employee will not be paid for the holiday if the employee chooses to take a furlough day off both before and after the holiday.

They do have to give 30 days. We got ours last week. I was surprised that they sent them out before sequestration was certain, but perhaps they need to start furloughs before April 1st.

Did it say when your furlough days would start? We heard they have to give 30 days notice, but not positive that's true.

It wouldn't prevent it but it would at least be a show of solidarity towards austerity and all that other b.s. we're supposed to be internalizing.
Totally agree. If only our political leaders would put more effort into symbolic gestures, we would all feel so much better, even if they couldn't agree on actual policy. Don't they realize this is very anxiety-producing for many of us!

I know. If not for that one day of golf, this whole situation could have been avoided. That damn Obama!
