The weather isn't a great fit, but I'd add Miami of Ohio to your list. Beautiful school, big time sports and yet a manageable size.

Too cold.

Similar to Boston. Alabama and Mississippi are warmer if that is your most important factor in choosing a college.

I wouldn't say most important but it seems climate is a very important factor. And it's a teenager's list of criteria. DD also eliminated schools with purple or orange school colors. So, there's that.

For us it is the opposite, we love cold climates. (The best schools tend to be in colder climates too.)

I heard that Tennessee is great and relatively affordable.

DD is intrigued regarding USC. What can you say about it?

it's in a ghetto. Housing is gonna be an issue.

Oh no. I haven't heard anything negative about its location (well, anything really).
Regarding the UMichigan and UT Austin recs, I think these are way too competitive to get into.
Regarding, JMU, my kids have said "no thank you" and that's fine with us because we think the kids can be accepted to better out of state schools.

DC likely applying to these 3. We are not VA residents so the VA schools are out of state.

DC ruled out UNC and UVM. We ruled out CU-Boulder. [/quote]

kid might love this school but we ruled it out too.

U Mich is popular among DC's classmates. It's a little cold there, but Ann Arbor is a great town.

U of Washington in Seattle
U of Minnesota in Minneapolis
U Texas. Austin is a magical place; don't let the "Texas thing" kill it for your kids if they are dems / progressive. Austin is an oasis

College of Charleston? Not sure about football there though. Football will be big at places like Alabama, ole miss, Georgia Tech, LSU.

Great programs for Journalism and International Business. Top ranked honors program, but they also have a "capstone" program which is less stress with lots of perks. Nice, airconditioned dorms. Beautiful campus. The thing I was stupidly excited about is that they allow the kids to swipe their food card at any location (chick-fil-a, pizza, etc) and not just the dining hall. As much as I wish my kid ate off the salad bar at college, I know it saves me $6000/yr.

Mine had a 3.9 weighted GPA, a 31 ACT and qualified for the McKissick scholarship that brought the tuition down to $2000 below in state rates- or about $4000 a semester or $8000 yr. So with rooom, board and food, travel and extras we are looking at $20,000 for a flagship out of state fun football school. I'm happy.
