OP again. Thanks for all the comments. We are reserved for the Curry Village tents for a few nights. I'm not big into camping, but the reviews on Trip Advisor helped persuade me I can do it. As first timers, it was important to us to be in the Valley.

El Portal is an option, too. It is on the 140, which you will likely take between the Bay Area and Yosemite. It is the last town on that road before you enter the park. We have stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge a few times. Pretty comfortable and some rooms have nice views of the Merced River. It is still another 30 minutes or so to Yosemite Valley from there and crowds can be a problem at the park entrance gate. If you are going in August, keep that in mind and get into the park early before all the day trippers arrive.
