I think its actually the reverse: there are people in every country of the world, not just ours, who see those different from themselves or change in general as threatening, these people THEN withrawl into a protective bubble, because they feel less threatened there. Surrounding themselves with people who think just like them, they then attack/strike out against those who they never had the courage to explore knowing, sharing with on na equal footing. Fascism was a world wide movement for a reason.

I see it as a more primitive human response, but it stays with us because intermittentantly in our world we do have crisis that lead to war and conflict, which pulls these people out of the wood work , giving them power ( Cheyney comes to mind)the refuse of whch takes a while to clear( the dissaray at the justice department after Bush)

Really? You think all of them are like that? Well, personally, I agree with a lot of liberal positions, specifically the social ones. But I'm fiscally conservative. I believe government should have less involvement in our lives. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe we need to help people get off the welfare system. But does this mean I'm a right-wing nut job? Also, I've never shot a bear and ate it. But there are certain aspects of my belief system that are conservative. You may be shocked to find out that in this world, there are many conservative thinkers that don't fit into this box that you've created.

I am plagued by the divisiveness in my own home. DH has evolved since the first term into a "Prepper".

I don't think there is a shred of logic to this, and it feels like it is starting to shred the family fabric (not unlike the politicization we experience nationally).

Any advice on how to work collaboratively.

BTW, I grew up overseas and was evacuated on more than one occasion, so I feel like I have seen the real thing (blackouts, then separated from the home (including pets and everything you own) for weeks; once there was nothing to return to; once it was fine to return).

I have no squabble with the recently purchased guns (not a fan, but not squabbling).

But I really don't get it and I am finding it increasingly difficult to deal with.

Bingo. I am socially pretty liberal. Don't do it on my lawn, I won't do it on yours. I don't, however, believe that every socially liberal cause needs to be dealt with on a Federal level.
