Oh, here we go again. Granite comes in variety of colors and patterns, if you cannot find something you like, then you should not look at natural stone at all of any kind.

Granite is dated.

Says who?? I'd love to buy a house with soapstone counters.

98% of people. Just cause you and the other soapstone person keep posting doesn't make it the majority.

Buyers want granite or silestone anything else is silly unless you plan on making it your forever home.

I don't like black counters with white cabinets, unless it's a really soft black like soapstone or a black marble. Otherwise, it's too sharp a contrast.

I would do gray-ish stone like a white-gray marble or quartzite (or artificial quartz product).

Paperstone looks great too if you are leaning towards dark and not shiny. You really need to consider the tone of your floor surface in your counter top and cabinet decision.

If you go for high contrast keep the visual clutter to a minimum, ie don't have door handles and draw pulls jumping out of the picture.

OP: was looking at a quartz (lyra) that looks like marble. would not do solid white.

That shit looks horrible and is a pain to maintain. Go with granite or silestone.

That looks like its had serious water damage. The cabinets are in bad shape and what's up with the peeling "tiles". I think with normal care soapstone and granite hold up well.

Op we have white cabinets with honed black granite and some carerra marble. Both are good contrasts. White counters are not a good look.

Soapstone is *not* a pain to maintain. We've had ours for 18 months and have had no problems whatsoever. We never oil it, and have no issues with rings or water spots. It looks great and it never has to be sealed like granite does.

I agree--go for the contrast.

Doesn't have to be black. Gray, it doesn't even have to be dark gray. Or blue. Whatever you like. But not white or cream.

A white with some gray in it (a la Christopher Peacock) is always nice.
