Actually, it does when you're married. Because the highest bracket for married folk kicks in only slightly above the level for singles, and my husband's salary gets us there, all of my salary gets taxed at the highest marginal rate.

So fascinating to see everyone defending the marriage penalty. And by the way, it's republicans that want to do away with it. You libs just don't want to admit that Obama is punishing working women, and Republicans want to help them. The December Obama tax hikes did exacerbate this problem, so quit jumping on OP for being surprised. I'm just betting that most of you haven't started doing your returns, yet.

Not to be snarky - but either you or your spouse change your deductions?
Did you have someone who does your taxes...someone you can/could have consulted?
Once you got married...that meant your combined HHI increased...so you needed to have a proactive plan for what you would do for taxes

Your problem is that you aren't a SAH housewife with a (white Repub) husband who makes big $. If you were, the tax structure would work to your benefit.



Funny, I used to work at the IRS and never once did I see any provisions in the IRC that provide tax breaks solely to white Republicans....
