Parochial schools ARE private schools because they ARE NOT PUBLIC SCHOOLS. They are also parochial.

Again, the distinction you are making is between independent Catholic schools and parochial Catholic schools, both of which are considered "private" by the Dept. of Education. No one is arguing that parochial schools are the same as independent Catholic or non-Catholic schools, people are arguing with you because you are saying your semantic perception of the word private is the only definition and it is the correct definition therefore no one should be able to use the word private to describe a parochial school. That's simply false. Parochial schools are classified as private schools legally. You can take that up with Arne Duncan or Congress if that pisses you off, but in the meantime if someone wants to use the word private about a parochial school they aren't misusing the word. Good grief.

Private schools = nonstate schools. Parochial schools are a subset of private schools. Independent schools and parochial schools are often very very different in feel even if both are Catholic, I will agree, but the term private applies to any school that is not funded by government. If you have a beef with that definition you can take it up with the government or CAPE or NCES or anyone else who uses that definition, but parochial is simply a subset of private as far as the generally accepted definition goes. You're making a distinction between parochial and independent and that's fine, but that doesn't mean parochial schools aren't private.

It is just not the correct way to refer to the school. There are public schools (free), parochial (religious AND heavily subsidized by the Catholic Church) and private (possibly religious, not subsidized). The result is that there is a VERY different feel at privates versus parochial. Georgetown Prep and Paul VI are worlds apart even though both are Catholic. St. Alban's is NOT parochial --it is private and Episcopalian. Private schools do not view parochial schools as their equal. Just telling it like it is.
