As someone who's a cookbook/recipe junkie, unless you're reading your cookbooks for the prose, nothing beats the internet. Between Food.com and the Home Cooking forum at Chowhound, there's no end to the good recipes and helpful how to advice out there.

If you're looking for something that will inspire you to cook, I highly recommend Laurie Colwin's two cookbooks, Home Cooking and More Home Cooking. No one instills the desire to roast a chicken or bake brownies like that woman could.

+2 I got it at Costco. I also have the orange one (quick recipes) and the green one (healthy recipes) but I always go back to the original red one.
