This is very common when large-scale foundational work is done that displaces "rat habitat." It's really freaking gross.

It seems this happens quite often in cities. I have a friend in Brooklyn whose back garden was infested with rats once construction on a huge apartment building began down the block from her. Frightening. Thankfully they pay rent so the landlord took up the issue. . .but OMG. She sent some video that scared the friggin daylights out of me. It was like The Birds, but with rats.

17:38 here. I hate to say it, but it is more than one mouse. They multiply at unreal rates. I wish we called a professional at the first moment that we suspected mice. You rarely see mice. They have horrible vision, but excellent hearing and come out mainly at night. It is disturbing when you read about what viruses their droppings contain. We used Brody Pest Control, who filled the holes and baited the house.

PP, can I asked who you used to plug the holes.

I will also try the traps suggested by the other PP. If anyone knows where to buy them locally let me know b/c I want to end this Mexican standoff ASAP.

I did bait the old fashion kind with peanut butter only to find them licked clean. So I stuck a chopstick in to see if they were set correctly, and they did go off with a tiny tap. I think this mouse is just mocking me at this point.

OP--NP here--I can only say that I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem

We the best luck with glue traps. I had no qualms about using them, but DH thinks they are cruel. The last time a mouse got caught in a glue trap, DH put the mouse in a tupperware container (used olive oil to unstick him), then drove to a field to let him go. Guess we'll have to try the cayenne.

I had an exterminator come with their little bait traps and the mice were dead within 24 hours. Amazing.

The mice that invaded our house liked dog food. As in straight out of my dog's food bowl. So I set up multiple snap straps with peanut butter and a piece of dog food. Worked like a charm.

I have had luck with using cayenne pepper. You sprinkle it anywhere you think they travel... anywhere you see poop, along baseboards, etc. It obviously will not kill them but is a great deterrent. The pepper burns their noses when they sniff and ther mouths when they lick their paws, which in return encourages them to leave. If you only have one or a few mice this might work.

Also, make sure to block up any obvious holes with steel wool and foam insulation.
