J.O. Wilson's not a terrible choice. We nearly sent our child to PS3 there last year - nice teachers, nice campus, Tools of the Mind curriculum, so it's a fine back-up. But you are incorrect in thinking that someone's gotta win; there will be zero lottery picks at Brent and likely Maury since all of those spots will be sucked up by IB and OOB sibling kids.


I meant Logan and SWS. Brent and Maury were just dreams. I accept that, but I felt strongly that I should include the schools I wanted him in, even if I didn't have a chance (since we're almost certainly keeping him at his current private preschool). Wouldn't it be amazing if I SOMEHOW MAGICALLY got into Brent? I know it's laughable, but a gal can dream.

Middle School thought: I wonder if any kids get into Oyster for 6th, and what that experience would be like for a kid without much Spanish going in (but a very strong student, very verbal, etc).

For the Hill poster with JO Wilson on her list - I know a kid who got into Tyler PS for 2011/2012 school year in the initial lottery. So I expect there will be some spots at Tyler SI, SWS and Logan Montessori which go to kids who are not sibs (or IB in the case of Tyler).

We are applying to Latin and privates for middle. Not IB for Deal. I think Hardy and Stuart Hobson are about equal (SH is relatively close to the Red Line, so that seemed a slightly better option).

Any middle school lottery applicants out there? With Deal out of the picture, no OOB slots, what DCPS middle school options are there apart from Hardy? Are there any West parents who can speak about their experience with grade 6 and up? Thanks,

And the other choice would have been Hearst. Now we're trying to guess at other reasonable choices. Obviously bilingual would be good. Is Bruce-Monroe OK? Is Tubman? Cooke?

Of course, they all have their problems, but none of those problems would be absolute deal-breakers (at least not that I know of right now). Since we're focusing entirely on preschool (we'll be moving in 2-3 years), I'm even more confidant that our family and our son could be happy at any of these schools, with some support and parental involvement of course. I still have my fingers crossed for the charter lotteries, but I'm happy with this.

If you actually put Burroughs and Bunker Hill on your list I'd love to chat with you. I ask because those are my in bounds (burroughs) and we probably know one another IRL. I helped organize a group of parents a few years back trying to energize those schools - no other parents stayed serious about this for a number of reasons (not blaming them in any way!). I'm really pleased to see those schools on someone's list - if you remember me from those efforts - would you consider getting in touch?

I know OOB with siblings that didn't get in to either Ross or Hyde last year, so yeah, those are both long shots.

I think there are tons of people who think EVERYONE ELSE will NOT tap WotP schools as lottery picks because of all the buzz about them being oversubscribed, etc and therefore, think they will have a good shot because no one else but them will waste lottery picks on those schools. My bet is that those WotP schools will still show OOB waitlists in the 100s because hope springs eternal! Good luck everyone.
