Sadly, we so rarely go out beyond our Alexandria-Arlington neighborhood anymore, that it was fun just to go downtown, somewhere different than the usual. We ended up having drinks & dinner at Matchbox, then went to Iron Horse, a nearby bar, for more drinks, shuffleboard, skeeball, etc. It was fun, and perfect for the kind of low-key night my husband wanted.

Maybe a little fancy, but what about Blue Duck Tavern? The fries are supposed to be amazing. It's a birthday, make it special!

I can second this. Holy shit the burgers at Ted's are so good. They do a good chopped salad too.


I don't find the food at Ted's that great, but they also have locations in Crystal City and Ballston.

Off yellow line ... Meridian Pint on 11th street in Columbia Heights. GREAT beer and good burgers and fun vibe.
