I think this only applies if you or your partner works in Maryland right? My wife and I live in DC (we are in a same-sex marriage). Wife works for MCPS and we are both on her insurance. We are having to shell out 20k+ for IVF that would normally be covered under her plan. We had to take out a second mortgage to cover the costs. It's been an incredibly frustrating and unfair ordeal.

Do you need to WORK in MD? B/c I have never heard of this. We live in MD, but DH works in VA.

I am going to be very bitter if we should have had coverage.

Uh, no, if you lived in VA you probably wouldn't have any coverage. That's the whole point of the mandate.

I had insurance from my company in Virginia and it covered nothing, not even the pre-testing. I then married my husband to get on his Maryland insurance so it would be covered. VA definitely does not have mandatory IVF insurance.

I'm actually getting married to my long-term BF so that we qualify for IVF coverage. We would have eventually married, but I think it's ridiculous that we have to do so to be covered. If we lived in DC or VA coverage would be provided without a marriage license. I live in MC and work for the Gov.

Seems weird to want to have a kid together but not marry. Seems messy. If he won't Marry you, i would suggest not having his kid for him.

My husband and I had our first child before we were married and it was done via IVF so not an accident. We decided based on our age that we didn't want to wait to have a child but we had to resolve some work/immigration issues before we could get married. Just because they don't want to get married right now does not mean they don't love each other or are not a stable couple. Marriage is mostly a religious based institution and I am not religious so I wouldn't have cared if I ever got married. I was happy being with my partner. I got married because it will make my life easier in the future since I am on a work visa and a green card via marriage is easier than a green card via my company (which they would apply for one on my behalf). Plus, I wanted to be on my husbands insurance for the next round of IVF since we can't afford another $20K loan for IVF. So I completely understand why someone does not want to get married to just because of a medical procedure that shouldn't be based on marriage in the first place.
