Thanks for the info. He's actually not violating the policy--he tutors graduated 8th graders over the summer to prepare for high school foreign language, and they are unenrolled from his school on the last day of 8th grade. Perhaps that's why the principal ok'd it. But good info to have if a 6th/7th grade parent inquires.

I currently teach high school in the Rockville area. I charge $45/hr if we meet at a library or other central location or between $55-$70 if I go to a client's home (depending on travel).

I would actually prefer a h.s. student who is really smart and who has done well on the SATs. A number of teachers were not the cream of the crop students. A smart high school kid could do the trick for much less money.

sorry but I have been burned on the tutoring process before and just getting a teacher and paying them money doesn't mean your child gets anywhere.

Your kid has got to work at it, too.

At LCPS, we paid $50 to one teacher a few years ago for math tutoring and $60 now for another teacher in reading fundamentals.

Frankly, I can tutor my kids in math myself by explaining it to them. Reading on the other hand? I am out of my depths with my 2nd grader who struggles to sound out words. He was in remedial group last year and flourished enough to be mainstreamed this year. There are very specific elements they reinforced with him that are beyond what I can do reading side by side with him. The money is worth it for reading assistance. Math, science, etc - - not so much for me.

My source is my administrators have always told me that it was against MCPS policy.

What is your source? DH tutors in foreign language over the summer for several of his middle school students. He checked with the principal first, who gave the green light. Teachers cannot recommend tutoring or offer themselves as tutors, but if a parent initiates, it is fine.

And to the OP, DH gets $60/hr for a one-on-one session.
