Nonsense. Particularly w/ regard to Mexican. You need to head up to Hyattsville.

Speaking of not that convenient places, I've heard Deli City has very good corned beef too.

That place is gross. So dirty and a real lack of cleanliness when making sandwiches. Not the nicest.

I am hoping. The delis around here are terrible.

The new place in Dupont Circle that someone posted is tasty, but it is not a Jewish deli. It's more like a cross between your grandmother's old country cooking and Middle Eastern flavors, all dolled up for the hipster crowd. I enjoyed it very much, but it is not at all authentic.

If you want a good Jewish deli south of New York City, you need to go to Philadelphia. (Maybe Baltimore would have one too, but I don't know Baltimore very well.) It's only 2.5 hours by car or 2 by train. The 4th Street Deli on 4th and Bainbridge is your destination. Lox piled THIS high. Steamed pastrami. Excellent pickles. I took my grandparents there and now they ask to go every time they visit!

Oh yes. If you're willing to head up to Baltimore, go to Pikesville. There are several good Jewish delis in Pikeville.

You'd think, but not really. Gourmet Again has great lox, corned beef, knishes, etc., but it's more of a specialty grocery store than a deli. EdMart was good 20 years ago, but I have no idea if it still is. Same with Attman's--not sure it has survived the generational turnover. Pikesville is proof that lots of Jews does not equal lots of good Jewish delis.

What happened to those places in Bethesda that tried...too bad.

Parkway has always been dirty! But that doesn't deter me

The Bethesda places failed. The large one above California Totrilla was horrible. The food was poor quality, premade, and reminded me of Kitchen Nightmares. The smaller one had good food but I think the owner just didn't know how to run a business.

I wonder if they are hard to be profitable. I think to be good and have high piled meat sandwiches and authentic lox and constantly fresh bagels requires a lot of overhead for inventory. And many ingredient are not cheap. The good delis I know in LA were expensive, even when they looked like hole in the wall joints.

I like Loebs.
